Song of the Day: Blood Orange “Out of Your League”

Blood OrangeBlood Orange is the moniker of Dev Hynes, British singer, songwriter, composer, producer, dancer and director. With roots in explosive dance punk (with Test Icicles) and unlikely lo-fi indie song craft (as Lightspeed Champion), Hynes has carved a truly individualist path as Blood Orange, focusing on a fusion of R&B and electronica with a lyrical concern for identity and spirituality. His fourth album, Negro Swan, is simultaneously fragmented and fluid, reflecting both his deeply personal songwriting and his collaborative spirit. Hynes has worked with a remarkable roster of artists including Chemical Brothers, Diana Vickers, Florence + the Machine, Theophilus London, Sky Ferreira, Solange, FKA Twigs, Jessie Ware, and Carly Rae Jepsen.

On the all-too-brief album track, “Out of Your League,” Hynes trades instruments with Steve Lacy (guitarist for LA R&B collective The Internet) to create a swirl of R&B-infused indie with Hynes sparkling falsetto front-and-center over a bass-heavy 80s-inspired groove.

[Verse]
Follow me under and never to be too unique
Definitely a trap, she’ll get ya body and you’re starting to feel weak
Maybe a thing that you wanted is all that you need
Don’t have to fill no expectation that aren’t the thoughts that you conceive

[Chorus]
Promises, promises, promises left that you know
Changing with time
Promises, promises, promises left that you know
Changing with time

[Verse]
Follow me under and never to be too unique
Definitely a trap, she’ll get ya body and you’re starting to feel weak
Maybe a thing that you wanted is all that you need
Don’t have to fill no expectation that aren’t the thoughts that you conceive
