Song of the Day: ADÉ “Something Sweet” feat. Fatman Scoop

This post is a huge shout-out to DMV rap notable Adé for providing me with my favorite 2019 summer jam, and one which I’ll continue to rock beyond the end of this summer. “Something Sweet” will definitely become a staple for me.

Previously known as Phil Adé, his work first came to my attention with his debut mixtape Starting on JV in 2009. The rap landscape had a different topography back then yet some of his DMV peers from that time like Wale and Logic have since developed prolific careers.

After following the usual formula of pushing content into the non-stop churn of the rap game, Adé changed course and developed material for other artists, including studio work and touring with his old peer Wale. He stepped back into the spotlight with his now shortened moniker and a newly signed major label deal with Epic Records by dropping his Always Something EP this year.

The collection of six tunes spans a solid breadth of styles and content and puts Adé’s acquired experience on display. The rapper is focused and deftly blends various approaches into a unified whole. “Something Sweet” is my repeat winner on the project. The melodic, breezy uptempo jam is a dancefloor winner for the ladies, and Adé recruits legendary party machine Fatman Scoop to add his signature shouts to hype the proceedings. Lastly, a clever Phonte sample flip provides the main structural groove that drives home the sweetness.
