One of my favorite dancehall vocalists, Pinchers, has been active since the mid-80s. “Lift it Up Again,” on the Answer riddim, is one of his early and very best hits where he flexes his unique vocal style. So good!
I’ve posted a lot of music by Jamaican dancehall artist Popcaan lately. “Love Yuh Bad” is (another) catchy tune for the club and is the second single off the album.
Captain Planet is one of my favorite producers these days. On his latest single, “In the Gray,” he cooks up a viciously catchy reggae instrumental, but for me it Brit Lauren’s infectious vocals that make the tune.
“Everything is Nice,” the lead single from Popcaan’s debut album, Where We Come From, has become something of a ghetto anthem in Kingston, touching on struggles and triumphs of everyday Jamaican life. A working man’s feel-good anthem.
One of the first reggae comps I came across was the 1987 Reggae Dance Hall Classics on Sleeping Bag Records. It was my first introduction to Barrington Levy.
New Orleans’ DJ Yamin just released this blend of Triston Palmer’s dancehall classic “Joker Smoker” and Dead Prez’s “Hip Hop.” The result is a smoked-out version of a classic hip-hop tune.
