Song of the Day: Ballin’ Jack “Found a Child”

It’s funny how a band can have a pretty decent career (four LPs on major labels over a five year run) but still be known mainly for a just few seconds of one of their songs. That’s the case with Ballin’ Jack whose 1970 song “Found a Child” was used by Young MC as the hook to his 1989 chart topping wedding staple “Bust a Move.” “Found a Child” is a great funky horn rock song that starts with some hard drums before going into a nice groove. The killer guitar break comes about two thirds of the way through the song and that’s what Young MC lifted.

Ballin’ Jack emerged from Seattle in 1969. They grew up with and later opened for a guy named Jimi Hendrix and were headliners themselves up and down the West Coast until they broke up in 1975.
