The Doobie Brothers‘ “What A Fool Believes” is a timeless tune I still spin earnestly in my sets. There are many great cover versions  – Aretha Franklin‘s is my fave – but the most unique rendition I’ve heard is by Tennessee alt-rock band Self, currently in an extended hiatus as a group.

Led by multi-instrumentalist and producer Matt Mahaffey, Self recorded the album Gizmodgery in 2000 using children’s toy instruments, similar to another pick of mine. The Doobie Brothers cover is on that record. Enjoy, as it’s pretty hard to find these days.
