Song of the Day: Bob Marley “Could You Be Loved”

One of my meditation teachers always asks, “what would love do?” I love this question because it reminds me that love is not only in us, but a force by itself too. The more you remind yourself that love can be cultivated- allowing you to love more and also to be loved more, the bigger this force becomes!

Bob Marley asks if we can be loved. That’s different than what I often hear musicians asking from their audience- usually we hear a call to love others more- but what if we also focused on allowing more love in?

Bob Marley is obviously a legend and this song is a classic- and yet, it doesn’t get old. When I’m at a club, ending a rowdy Saturday night where drinks have been flying off the shelf and men are scouring the dance floor for the single women, I often do what people expect the least. I play a Bob Marley set. All of a sudden there is a unison of voices singing “Love would never leave us alone, in the darkness there must come out the light.”

As a DJ I consider my role to be much bigger than providing the soundtrack. Music is powerful and what I play when, matters. Whether we’re fully aware of it or not, lyrical content seeps into our subconscious. I’d rather have people asking themselves the question “Could you be Loved?” than commanding the women on the dance floor to “back that a** up.”
