Song of the Day: Pete Philly “Favorite Song”

“Favorite Song” is my first exposure to Pete Philly and it’s a great first impression. Some liken him to a Dutch Pharrell who raps and sings on irresistible pop songs that have additional layers of depth from his hip-hop, jazz and funk influences.

Pete Philly’s journey starts with roots in Aruba, eventually landing in the cultural melting pot of Amsterdam. He recorded four albums and logged tons of touring miles with his partner Perquisite before they dissolved the group in pursuit of solo careers in 2009. He dropped two solo albums in quick succession in 2010 and 2011 before going silent for seven years.

It was an ongoing battle with Lyme disease that triggered Pete Philly’s extended absence, and his recovery finds him with renewed creative and professional momentum. “Favorite Song” is the type of record that can carry a long toiling artist beyond a cult following to wide popularity. I predict this tune will definitely get licensed to a major consumer brand’s ad campaign this year.
