Song of the Day: Big Star “Feel”

Back in the days before the internet I learned about new music from listening to college (or alternative) radio, going to record stores, talking to friends with better taste than mine and reading music magazines. One band which always seemed to pop up in articles and reviews was an early 70s band from Memphis called Big Star which got name checked by REM, the Replacements and many other of my favorite bands.

Why hadn’t I heard of these guys before if all my heroes knew them? One day in the mid-80s I went down to my local record store, Wax n Facts in Atlanta determined to find a Big Star record. They had a European reissue of their first album “#1 Record” which I bought for $12. I took that LP home and as soon as I dropped the needle on the first track “Feel” I knew what the fuss was about. Within thirty seconds I was sucked in and have been a huge fan ever since. (I know own an original Ardent pressing of the LP but am not selling it sorry).
