Song of the Day: Vince Guaraldi “Greensleeves”

I love Christmas: the music, the warmth and the cheer. As a child it was the magic and wonder of pageantry that made the holidays so special… that and the presents. In my rebellious adolescence in was the smug joy knowing my family was unwittingly celebrating pagan traditions. Finally as an adult with a busy schedule and little time for family it is a cherished event full of laughter, food and love.

Though my perpective on Christmas has changed through the years holiday specials have remained a constant. By far my favorite is A Charlie Brown Christmas. Quite some time ago I purchased the soundtrack which was performed by The Vince Guaraldi Trio. The most famous track is of course “Linus & Lucy,” but the fresh jazz takes on holiday classics like “My Little Drummer” and “O Tannenbaum?” make this a great album for decorating the tree. I chose “Greensleeves” to share with you the holiday season.

What’s interesting about this song is it has nothing to do with the holidays but is about unrequited love. If fact the melody was used for the song “What Child Is This?” which may explain why it’s closely related to the holiday season. In either case it is the music and the memories that mean the most to me. Enjoy =]
