Song of the Day: Muhsinah “LMO” (feat. Pos Plug Won of De La Soul)

2016 has given me a whole new year to fawn over D.C. electro soul darling Muhsinah. With a style birthed in Washington’s own Duke Ellington high school for the performing arts and Howard University’s school of fine arts, she took classical piano training, melded it with a boot camp of boom-bap hip-hop beat craft and evolved a singular style all her own. Along the way she picked up a Grammy nomination, toured and recorded with some of the best in the game, and built up a sweet solo discography. At the top of the year she dropped her January EP, four perfectly chosen treats that range from melancholy to groovy.

“LMO” popped up in the past in another form, punchier and more staccato. It’s hard to say one is better than the other, but the newly released revision on the January EP has featured verses from De La Soul’s Pos Plug Won and shifts the drum programming strongly to the dancefloor. Where the original was funky and contemplative, the second coming amps up the fun factor.
