Idris Muhammed 1939-2014

Last week, legendary jazz drummer Idris Muhammed passed away at the age of 74. Born Leo Morris, his earliest recorded session as a drummer was on Fats Domino’s 1956 hit “Blueberry Hill.” His career as a session musician for soul and R&B acts carried him through the early 1960s; he eventually joined jazz saxophonist Lou Donaldson’s band in 1965. His first session as a leader was 1970’s Black Rhythm Revolution! on Prestige Records. He started incorporating the sounds of pop and disco into his albums; his 1977 release Turn This Mutha Out includes the Loft classic, “Could Heaven Ever Be Like This?,” here edited with a light touch by Leftside Wobble. Originally executed in 2010, the track has been receiving some serious Soundcloud love in the days since Idris’ passing. Lucky for us all, it is still available for a free download.
