Song of the Day: Gilberto Gil “Aquele Abraço”

One of my favorite Brazilian songs—heck just one of my favorite songs, period—”Aquele Abraço” was released in 1969 by Gilberto Gil. Oddly enough as the song climbed the charts in Brazil, Gil was in exile in London having been thrown out by the military government along with Caetano Veloso. Gil would return a few years later and then in an odd twist become the county’s Minister of Culture in 2003.

This song is a love letter to the city of Rio and was played by Seu Jorge and Marisa Monte at the Olympic closing ceremonies in London as a nod to the upcoming games in Rio in 2016.
