Song of the Day: DJ Shadow “Organ Donor”

This is by far my favorite track from DJ Shadow’s 1996 release on Mo’Wax, Entroducing… , his debut studio album. The song is a full range representation of DJ Shadow’s art. Sampling mining, arrangement, style  and scratching all come together to make one damn fine track. Also.. organs… come on. The sample in the beginning says it all. The body and soul the organ carries is profound. DJ Shadow’s use of the sample, including the disjointed break down later in the track, adds a character that is both serious and silly. Beyond this track DJ Shadow is revered in hip-hop production circles as a master of sampling. If samples were diamonds then he has dug deeper and farther into the dark depths of vinyl to find the rarest of gems. Not just finding samples but put many of them together from varies sources to create masterpieces to adorn the crown of kings. Turn this one up. Your boss won’t mind…
