“Generals and Majors” by the English band XTC came out in 1980, and its lyrics are still topical today especially in an election year. The song appeared on XTC’s fourth album Black Sea which is solid all the way through. I loved XTC’s off kilter power pop from the first time I ever heard them.

XTC started in 1976 and put out their first LP in ’78. In 1982 as they were just starting to really take off they stopped touring for good due to founding member Andy Patridge’s bouts with stage fright. The accompanying video (look for Richard Branson in it!) was one of the first at the start of the video age.
