Song of the Day: Poom “Toi et Moi”

The synth-pop duo Poom hails from Paris. They released their debut album in 2016, which I just discovered on band camp this week! (As a side note, I recommend digging for new music on bandcamp, but be forewarned – it may reel you in for hours… Always worth it in the end though, case and point: Poom!) The whole album is great from start to finish, creating a real sense of flow and creating an up-beat, fun vibe.

By way of comparison, Poom has a similar vibe to Air– they are interesting, loungy, poetic, emo-at times electronic music. The video to this song, “Toi et Moi” (which translates to “You and Me”) is trippy – in more ways than one.  A girl and a boy- maybe 17, meet up in an open field, lay out on a blanket and embrace. They’re tripping on something and looking up at the stars. The song is atmospheric, layered, harmonic.

“Toi et Moi”, is effectively a duet between the two members of Poom, with Camille on lead vocals and Seigfried on harmony and back-up. This song (the lyrics which I had to google for the English translation) are perfect for an end-of-summer soundtrack. As we all scramble to hit the beach or do some other summer activity this Labor Day weekend, the lyrics begin “I would like to go to the sea, lying on the sand, take a little air and smell the spray. Stay again, stay until the body is salted.”
