Song of the Day: Oliver “Heart Attack (feat. De La Soul)”

LA-based production duo Oliver (aka Oliver “Oligee” Goldstein and Vaughn “U-Tern” Oliver) have released their full-length debut, Full Circle on Pulse Recordings. Following up on three well-received EPs (Dirty Talk, Mechanical and Light Years Away) and years of remix work, the disco-fueled duo crafted a 10-track journey through down ‘n’ dirty 70s funk and sci-fi-inspired 80s electro, shot through with an unapologetically indie vibe. Though current dance music is more focused on charting singles and getting club play, Oliver envisioned an immersive full-length statement. Says Oliver “Oligee” Goldstein:

It’s not really an album era anymore, but we love albums. We wanted to create a piece of work that had an arc to it, that shows a lot of different approaches stylistically. When you have a three- or four-song EP, you can’t really showcase everything that you want to say. With a full-length, we could really spread it out and just show all the different ideas and different sides of us.

Following up on the hard-driving album teaser, “Electrify,” second single “Heart Attack” features living legends De La Soul and has a decidedly 80s hip-hop vibe (Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five’s classic “The Message” immediately comes to mind) and a femme pop vocal hook. “One more time gonna blow your mind all the way to the sun.”
