Song of the Day: Mist “Twin Lanes”

Cleveland-based, electronic duo Mist, composed of John Elliott and Sam Goldberg (who between the two of them are involved in another dozen or so electronic projects) having been making exciting and vaguely abstract experimental music together since 2009. “Twin Lanes” is the lead-off track from Mist‘s 2011 LP, House, and it is a doozy. The song begins with a rapid synth figure that is reminiscent of rain hitting your window at the beginning of a thunderstorm. The song gradually builds around that simple-appreciated figure, being fleshed out with some slowly building synths, minimal percussion, various weird samples and eventually, gorgeous minor key block chords that almost sound like they are being generated on a medieval organ.

Mist have been an on-again off-again project, releasing 2 full length LPs and an EP. John Elliot‘s various electronic projects include Colored Mushroom And The Medicine Rocks, Emeralds, Fancelions, Hot Air Balloon Ride, Imaginary Softwoods, Inner Spaced, Medicine Rocks, Mental Prism,, Revelation Blitz, Silver Pearl, The Reel Deel and more. While Sam Goldberg is in fewer groups than his collaborator, he also founded and runs the experimental, ambient, drone, noise and electronic music label, Pizza Night Records.
