Song of the Day: Lou Rebecca “Break It Apart”

French indie electro musician, Lou Rebecca, comes out the gates swinging with “Break It Apart” the single from her 2019 debut LP (entitled Restless). A French native (born and raised in Paris), though currently based in Austin, Texas, Rebecca combines bold electronics, divine pop melodies and carefully crafted music videos for a holistic multi-media production.

While Lou Rebecca is fairly new to the pop scene, having only previously released an EP in 2018, her work is filled with enough personality and a certain mischievous charm that I think we are likely to see her emerge as a major figure in pop over the next few years.

“Break It Apart” is built around a clean electro pulse and Rebecca‘s insistent though somehow still relaxed vocals. There is more than a little Serge Gainsbourg in her delivery. Cascades of synthesizers fill things out, and while the track is certainly bubblegum, it retains an edge that keeps it from ever getting cloying. The rest of the LP is just as strong. Hopefully an exciting preview of things to come.
