Song of the Day: The Jones Girls “Nights Over Egypt”

First off, this track is so gorgeous it gives me goose bumps and makes my hair stand on end. The Jones Girls‘ 1981 hit, “Nights Over Egypt”, was written by the genius hand of keyboardist and producer Dexter Wansel. Serving as all-around musical mastermind, Wansel worked closely with the Philadelphia International Records hit-making titans, Kenneth Gamble and Leon Huff. With Wansel‘s sonic signatures in full glory, the production on this song is majestic, richly textured, and with such a deep, deep groove. Penetrating and evocative lyrics like, “your eyes won’t believe what your mind can’t conceive,” invite you to enter into this song’s world. The vocal trio of sisters, known as The Jones Girls, were seasoned to absolute vocal perfection by the time they laid this track down. Their simply beautiful, honey-sweet harmonies are pure joy!

Hailing from Detroit, Michigan, Brenda, Shirley and Valorie Jones, make up The Jones Girls. After many years of singing back-up behind a who’s who of musical artists from Lou Rawls to Aretha Franklin to Diana Ross, these sisters launched themselves as bonafide stand-alone group. Their biggest hit was 1979’s “You Gonna Make Me Love Somebody Else”, which broke into the Billboard Top 40. Thanks to their close association with Philadelphia International Records, they were able to work with incredible song-writers, musicians, arrangers, and producers. Here’s to The Jones Girls!
