Song of the Day: Glass Candy “Warm In The Winter”

[I]t is a great song for capturing that mixed emotion of both looking forwards in celebration but also looking backwards

Today is New Year’s eve, which is one of my very favorite times of the year. While it is a somewhat arbitrary holiday, the combination of anticipation of what the New Year might bring, coupled with reflection on everything that happened over the course of the previous rotation around the sun has always resonated strongly with me. Transitions can bring about mixed emotions and New Year’s Eve/ Day are all about embracing transition. Glass Candy‘s “Warm In The Winter” then is a great track for the holiday. Complete with its invocations of the New Year, its dance forward attitude and slightly melancholic synths, it is a great song for capturing that mixed emotion of both looking forwards in celebration but also looking backwards on the year that is now gone, complete with all of its triumphs and tragedies.

Glass Candy is an indie dance 2-piece composed of vocalist Ida No and producer/ multi-instrumentalist Johnny Jewel. The group were formed in Portland, Oregon in 1996 and have been stables of Jewel‘s Italians Do It Better label. The group started off as more of an indie rock/ no-wave outfit, but eventually morphed into more of the Italo-disco outfit that they are now. Sonically, they have a lot in common with many of Jewel‘s other projects, including Chromatics and Desire, only with a sharper dance focus.

Here is wishing everyone a thrilling and safe New Year’s Eve. All the best in 2020!
