Song of the Day (America Week): Chicago “Saturday in the Park”

Ahh, summertime! It’s really here. Arrived. When I think about the summer I think: rolling the grass, strolling through the park, bbq’s, and ice-cream. Not too far off from what you’re thinking? And not too far off from what Chicago brings us in “Saturday in the Park.” Robert Lamm paints a picture for us, he “thinks” it was the 4th of July? Then again, there are times in the summer when I can’t remember myself if it’s a Saturday or a Tuesday- summer seems to slow down time, work eases, people are just generally more relaxed! So Robert Lamm, lead-singer of Chicago, thinking it was the 4th of July, a Saturday, and he’s at the park among people smiling, eating ice-cream, dancing, laughing…

Chicago is a rock band from- you guessed it! Chicago. The big bronze section helps to distinguish them among the rock bands of the 60’s and 70’s, along with their constant stream of top-charting singles for over two decades. This song is up-beat but not a fast-tempo, it’s easy to listen to, catchy, and descriptive enough to catch your imagination and bring you to that same park. The video below is a live recording from a concert, where you can see the audience clapping along. The band is tight live! We even get some added harmonies that are not in the original recording. A classic, a great summer tune- enjoy!
