Song of the Day: Blackalicious “Make You Feel That Way”

From their 2002 record, Blazing Arrow, Blackalicious‘ “Make You Feel That Way” is a laid back anthem to feeling good and keeping a positive outlook. The song features DJ Chief Xcel flipping a mellow harp and horn sample while Gift of Gab raps on top of it. The song belongs to the realm of socially conscious hip-hop and stresses positivity. Gift of Gab in particular is surprisingly restrained on the track and he normally is something of a speed demon behind the mic. Anthony Coleman II contributes the original muted trumpet line that anchors the whole track. Even if you are having a long week, this song will help lift your mood.

Blackalicious originally hail from Sacramento, CA and the duo have been collaborating together since 1994. The duo first met in high school and forged a quick friendship based on their shared love of music. The two stayed friends and Gift of Gab, followed Xcel to Davis, California where the latter was attending the University of California Davis. Xcel had been performing in a hip-hop group called Solesides that also included DJ Shadow, Lateef the Truthspeaker and Lyrics Born. The pair released their first EP as Blackalicious in 1994 and have recorded 4 LPs and several solo albums since.
