This past Friday night we had the pleasure of DJing Regina and Brian’s wedding at Woolly Mammoth Theatre in downtown DC. The theme was Old Hollywood, inspired by the glamour of Regina’s stunning vintage dress (our snapshots really don’t do it justice), but also combined with very personal touches throughout, like a display of family photos and various vintage Star Wars Han Solo & Princess Leia action figures serving as cake toppers. Nice touch! But Regina was clearly the most important princess in the place—with honorable mention to her adorable daughter Riana—and from where we were standing Brian steered clear of any Han Solo-as-scoundrel behavior.
“Be My Baby”
After a beautifully scripted and professionally choreographed ceremony on stage in the theatre (complete with personal music cues), the guests gathered in the artfully-lit lobby for cocktails and to await Regina and Bryan’s grand entrance and thank you’s on the staircase. Their first dance was choreographed to The Shirelles “Be My Baby,” performed flawlessly and to wild applause. Followed by heartfelt mother & son and bride & daughter (with Regina’s parents joining in) dances (and Ben Harper “Happy Everafter in Your Eyes” and The Beach Boys “God Only Knows,” respectively) .
After that, I thought I’d play some classic soul to get everyone in the party mood while they partook of the wonderful spread of filipino pork, pot stickers and sushi (!) but the dancefloor started jumping immediately to a heady uptempo 60s/80s mix of James Brown, Ace Cannon, Marvin Gaye, Martha & the Vandellas, Bruce Springsteen, The Rolling Stones, Toni Basil, and The Spencer Davis Group. Then the script went out the window as friends and family danced the night away.
The Foundations “Build Me Up Buttercup” was a late-evening highlight and a Primal Scream/Cure/Jay-Z blend finished the night on a high note, leaving Regina & Brian and all their guests elated and exhausted.
