The three artists in Heavy Breathing, who have collaborated for 22 years, deserve some recognition outside the small world of DC gallery goers. Or they may continue producing music and video for their own satisfaction.

A fine example of mid-80s motivational soundtrack rock, a staple of the class-conscious underdog sports movies of the era (see also The Karate Kid, Better Off Dead). I have to wonder if “Break the Ice” wasn’t written for a different movie: the story of a young man who spends every afternoon on a frozen over baseball diamond in suburban Toronto practicing extreme moves in his hockey skates.
This is a song that somehow ended up on my computer, probably attached to an unrelated album that I downloaded. It was mislabeled as a Will Oldham song and I never had cause to question that attribution. When preparing to write it up as a song of the day, I discovered that it is in fact by Jason Molina.
