Song of the Day: Soul Rebels “I Really Don’t Love U”

I discovered the New Orleans brass, funk, hip-hop, melting pot band the Soul Rebels 1994 debut LP Let Your Mind Be Free in a used CD bin almost twenty years ago and bought it on the strength of the cover alone. It was one of the moments of love at first listen. The entire CD cooks. The Village Voice called them “the missing link between Public Enemy and Louis Armstrong!” I could have picked any song of this CD (PLEASE someone release this on vinyl!) but this is probably my favorite. Probably not one to play at a wedding!
The Soul Rebels were formed in 1991 and have performed with (among others) Green Day, Wu Tang Clan, Rare Essence, Marylin Manson, and Rakim. They still hold down a Thursday night residency at Le Bon Temps Roule in the Big Easy when they aren’t touring.
