Song of the Day: Saint Etienne “Magpie Eyes”

Over the last 28 years, the indie pop trio Saint Etienne, (consisting of producers/ multi-instrumentalists Bob Stanley and Pete Wiggs along with singer Sarah Cracknell) have forged a remarkably consistent career. Combining elements of electronic, dance, 60’s French Pop, and indie rock, the group have managed to make innovative and highly literate that is still great fun to listen to. The group, who are cheekily named after a French Football Club, have always brought conducted the whole pop star thing with wit and good cheer.

“Magpie Eyes” is one of several standout tracks from the group’s 2017 LP Home Counties. The record is a tribute to the leafy suburbs that ring London and and in which the three members of Saint Etienne grew up and has a nice, early fall bucolic feel to it.

The song itself was issued as a single and has a bouncy minor key electronic feel to it. The lyrics of the song deal with the idolization of memory, nostalgia and how things can look different in retrospect with time. The twist to the song is about added depth that comes with maturity in a relationship can be just as meaningful as the brilliant plans of a new couple. A nice sentiment and a hopeful one.
