There’s a small soccer tournament going on in Brazil right now called the World Cup. To say that soccer (futebol) is a religion in Brazil would be an understatement. Wilson Simonal was a huge star in Brazil throughout the 60’s and 70’s until a scandal tarnished his image (he was posthumously cleared). This song was originally released for the 1970 World Cup (which Brazil won). It later appeared on a 1978 World Cup record with the title “Corrente 78 – Pais Do Futebol” That album (pictured above) also featured songs by Jorge Ben, Jackson do Pandeiro and the Golden Boys. Here’s the title track which translates to “Here is the Country of Football.” Gol gol gol!!!!
