Song of the Day: WBBL “Check Menina”

Os Mutantes get a ghetto funk rework from WBBL

Out today on Ghetto Funk Records is the label debut EP from Joe Gale, otherwise [un]known as the mysterious rising star WBBL.

Ghetto Funk Presents: WBBL is four tracks of floor fillers, loaded with classic party hip-hop samples (LL Cool J, Busta Rhymes), compressed thumping drums, and serious bass wobble. Advance copies of the EP have been getting mixtape love from some of the leading lights of the scene (Featurecast, A. Skillz, and Stickybuds), and the standout cut for me is clearly “Check Menina.” It takes the ghetto funk style in a slightly new direction, blending the descending fuzz guitar riff and vocal from Brazilian Tropicalia legends Os Mutantes’ “A Minha Menina” (a Jorge Ben tune from their 1968 debut album) with the Beastie Boys “Ch-Check It Out” acapella (used to similar effect by Father Funk, and blogged by yours truly back in late January).

The EP is a vinyl-only release so all you’re going to get here is a little digital taste. You’re going to have to head over to the Ghetto Funk Shop and buy it (!) to hear the entire thing in its full thumping analog glory.
