Song of the Day: Spinal Tap “Stonehenge”

Spinal TapIn honor of Nigel Tufnel Day, here is “Stonehenge.”

In ancient times (the late 80s), before the dawn of the internet, in order to listen to the music of your choice, you had to go to a record store and buy the album on vinyl or cassette. My Holy Grail record for several years was the soundtrack to This Is Spinal Tap. Every time I walked into a record store it was the first thing I looked for and I never found it.

Fast forward to 2005 – I’m helping a friend clean out a group house in Columbia Heights which has been home to a long string of people who left their stuff behind. On the mantle in the living room is a hoard of cassette tapes which uncannily mirrored my own collection at age 16. 90 minute tapes with Metallica on one side and Fugazi on the other, all with the band logos carefully copied on the spine in felt tip pen. There in the middle was the Grail, a dubbed copy of Spinal Tap.

I’m not sure that kids today will ever know what it is like to wait 20 years to hear the song you want.
