I’ve tried not to blow up this stream of content with Tall Black Guy productions but it’s been a while so here’s another tasty nugget from the producer with the most descriptive name in the biz.
On Louie Vega’s 2016 long player Louie Vega Starring…XXVIII, the house music meastro made his first album length statement as a solo artist to add to his wildly prolific output with Masters At Work, Nuyorican Soul, Elements of Life and many other collaborative projects. While at the helm, Louie did invite an all-star cast of artists to contribute to the 28 track opus covering the soul, jazz, latin and dance components of his style. Sandwiched between a Stevie Wonder cover and an Eddie Drennon cover is a delightful, airy bit of swing and scatting featuring Zara McFarlane’s vocals dancing over an acoustic jazz trio. If this album were pressed on triple vinyl, “Because We Love It” would be the enchanting coda to side A2.
Then Tall Black Guy got his hands on “Because We Love It”, and while he’s known for radically different reworks he used a light touch for Louie. Summer’s not over yet, so add this one to your breeze, beach and sunset playlist. TBG retains the swing but undergirds the whole thing with chopped breaks, percussion and a light four to the floor bump. Makes for a great soulful DJ set opener or a soundtrack to a sunny drive with the top down.
