Song of the Day: Johnny Guitar Watson “Superman Lover”

Song of the Day Johnny Guitar Watson Superman Lover

Johnny Guitar Watson “Superman Lover” is the Song of the Day

Who doesn’t love a song about a superhero? The Ramones doing “Spiderman” or the Link Wray version of the “Batman Theme”. Both are classics but my favorite has to be the 1976 “Superman Lover” single by Johnny “Guitar” Watson. For years I’ve played this song at the end of the night in my club DJ sets. It’s a perfect closer!

Watson—who came out of Houston, TX—was an electric guitar hero who helped pioneer the use of feedback and reverb in the 1960s. In the 70s he reinvented himself as a pimp daddy funk player and had a string of hits including “Superman Lover”. He died like a pimp daddy too, on a stage in Japan in 1996.
