Song Of The Day: Hilton Felton “Bee Bop Boogie”

It’s been an interesting week for me. For quite a while now, I’ve been slaving away on the liner notes for a project slated to be released on Jazzman Records. The compilation celebrates the best of a talented local musician, a man by the name of Hilton Felton.

This week I’m wrapping it all up, plus reminiscing to the music that made the man so profound. Amongst his great catalogue of recordings made at CTI’s private studio, The Soul Searcher’s anthems, and even some Eva Cassidy creations, sits a long list of self-released, self-produced material. In the 90s, Hip-Hop producers used to look for one particular song off of the album “A Man for all Reasons,” on Hilton’s personal label, (aptly titled “Hilton’s Concepts”), for it’s long percussive breaks and party rock appeal. “Bee Bop Boogie” still works as part of any good DJ’s set; those breaks alone really add to the night’s vibe (if tastefully dropped, of course). But the full song can also kill it in a dimly lit jazz club, inspiring the ladies to get down with smooth sensuality.

Who am I to choose… either way gets me smiling.
