Song of the Day: Funky Four Plus One More “Rappin and Rocking the House”

Disco rap — the first wave of rap records ever released– emerged from NYC block parties before hip-hop was even a thing. Basically, when hip-hop was emerging in the South Bronx in the late 70s and early 80s, vocalists were rapping over DJs playing disco breaks in clubs and block parties. These first rap records were an attempt to capture that energy on vinyl. And hot damn, these dudes (and ladies) can rap and rap and rap some more. Often non-stop for 15 or more minutes. Funky Four Plus One More’s “Rappin and Rocking the House” is one of my very favorites from the genre. Enjoy!
