Song of the Day: Fela Kuti “Roforofo Fight”
Normally a post about afrobeat originator Fela Kuti would include something about politics in his native Nigeria (and maybe because of the fact that the man who jailed him in 1984, the former military dictator Muhammadu Burhai, was elected president almost two weeks ago) but this blog is not usually the place for politics. The song “Roforofo Fight”—title track of the 1970 album Roforofo Fight—is here because it is a favorite song from one of my all-time favorite musicians. I’m also driving to Florida for my daughter’s spring recess this week and need some long rhythmic songs to play in the car and this polyrhythmic beast clocks in at 15:42. Perfect road trip music; I’ll be halfway to Richmond by the time its over!
