Beats are more than just a musical component, they can now be considered their own genre. A whole worldwide scene of artists are being lauded for drum, synth and sample creations that span the electronic spectrum but don’t solely live in the styles of downtempo, hip-hop, jazz, techno and dubstep.
Such artists are often keen on pseudonyms, which is how we arrive at the work of Dirg Gerner, who is either a collaborator with German beatmaker fLako or his singing alter ego, depending on whom you consult.
“Loose Lights”, from Gerner’s Preface EP is a hypnotic piece. Built on a haunting, descending three note vocal, it gradually evolves into a sexy latin shuffle that vocalist Rahel turns into a duet.
