Song Of The Day: Cypress Hill “Latin Lingo”

1992 was an interesting year for me. I was at a cross roads musically. My stereo was a schizophrenic beast switching between Sheer Terror and Bad Brains to Skatalites and Eek-A-Mouse to WAR and Funkadelic. If you stopped and thought about it Cypress Hill made perfect sense at the time. Hip Hop had never been a part of the rotation before but Cypress Hill was the gateway group that lead me down the path. This was about the time I had become interested in DJing and producing. I remember my boy Hugo and I listening to “Pschobetabuckdown” and Parlament trying to understand how the track was made. We didn’t have Google or YouTube to run to. We even made “stop tapes” in an attempt to sample tracks. Latin Lingo was one of my favorite tracks. What ever music I listen to in always comes down to rhythm and bass. Listening to this track reminds me of sitting in a basement off Blake Lane in Fairfax with my crew thumbing through records and exploring music with the perspective of youth.
