Song of the Day: Bobby Shmurda “Hot Boy”

Another summer has come and gone.  It’s around this time when I take a step back and consider what I believe the club anthems were during those warmer months.  For Rap music (I’ll refrain from using the term hip-hop to describe this song), the Summer 2014 anthem was the explicit version of Bobby Shmurda’s “Hot Boy.”  Like it or not, “the streets” chose this as the summer banger, not iTunes sales or Billboard charts.

The dance floor would erupt with excitement every time

Every time I dropped Bobby Shmurda’s “Hot Boy” at a club, the dance floor would erupt with excitement.  I would barely make it out of the first few verses before the crowd demanded I run it back again from the top.  One night, at a downtown DC club, I played it six times back-to-back.  The crowd responded with the same fervor as when I dropped it the first time.  I haven’t seen a song garner that many multiple plays since Jay Z & Kanye West’s “N***** in Paris”.

Additionally, “Hot Boy” is the song that commanded multiple plays, in the same night, at clubs.  As a DJ, I do not condone multiple plays of a song throughout the night.  Save the club bangers for peak time, play them sporadically throughout that time, and keep it moving.  Maybe it’s a throwback reaction to my days as a Reggae sound system DJ where replaying a song during a sound clash competition almost instantly disqualifies you.  As a result, I’m always prepared to play alone, for at least eight hours, without repeating songs.  It requires some savvy, that’s for sure.

Bobby Shmurda’s rise to the public eye with “Hot Boy” is one of those “video goes viral and creates an internet sensation overnight” stories.  The video and official song features Bobby rapping over a beat that is originally from Lloyd Banks’ song “Jackpot.” In the video, Bobby and crew are doing a dance they call the “Shmoney Dance.”  The video spread like wildfire, prompting many to create similar Vine videos of themselves doing the Shmoney Dance.  Consequently it became a must play for Rap fans.  It’s quite a sight to see when the entire dance floor of a club does the Shmoney Dance.

Take a listen to the clean version of “Hot Boy”, ask a friend to teach you the Shmoney Dance (I couldn’t find a clean version of the official video) and meet me on the dance floor.
