Song of the Day: Tom Rogerson and Brian Eno “Motion in Field”

The new collaboration between improvisational pianist Tom Rogerson and ambient music pioneer Brian Eno is a highly successful melding of two musical forms. From their new LP Finding Shore, “Motion in Field” is a realization of the strengths and musical ideas that each brings to the table. Eno, always the master collaborator, seems to have put his (in)famous(?) oblique strategies into full effect, while Rogerson is an able and thoughtful pianist who weaves improvisational lines around the slowly unwinding soundscapes.

“Motion in Field” is an interesting hybrid of electronic and acoustic sounds. Eno devised a surprisingly warm, though slightly “glitchy”, field where the acoustic piano, once it enters, manages to mesh perfectly. The track has a certain wintry feel to it, which makes it perfect for the season. While Eno‘s collaborations are almost always interesting, this one is one of his most tuneful.
