Song of the Day: Tall Black Guy “Spend My Life With You”

Tall Black Guy is at it again. Well, he’s always at it. But I couldn’t make a new post every time he did something cool because then all the posts would be about Tall Black Guy. So using the power of restraint, I’ve refrained from posting a new TBG joint until now.

a monster two-stepping groove

Right before Christmas, the Detroit beat master gifted us all a new collection of soulful reworks, from well known artists to obscurities. His chop job on Al Green is right in that distinctive TBG pocket. He lets the first verse of “Let’s Stay Together” rock for a bit in untouched form, like a magician showing you his seemingly normal deck of cards before proceeding to blow your mind. When Reverend Al gets to the line “And I want to spend my life with you” things go much deeper. Tall Black Guy constructs a monster two-stepping groove on top of this one line, with other vocal snippets weaving in and out, layers of atmospheric keyboards and arpeggios, and an obscenely funky Rickenbacker bass line. It sounds like a band but it’s all one guy. A Tall Black Guy.

This is the type of jam that I have knocking in the ride when I pull up to a red light in vigorous neck snapping, head nod mode with my face contorted by the funk.
