Song of the Day: Jaydee “Plastic Dreams”

“Plastic Dreams” by the Dutch DJ and producer Jaydee is one of my favorite house tracks. To me the deep groove and organic soulful organ riffs stood out in the early 90’s landscape of experimentation in synth sounds. I remember hearing this tune in a “chill room” at a rave. The slow and low key intro and the subsequent addition of elements over time lulls the listener into a trance and coaxes the body to move.

Jaydee was born Robin Albers in 1956 in the Netherlands. His career as a DJ and House producer began in the 70s, where Jaydee broke new ground as one of Holland’s first mixing DJs. Before going into music, Albers had a career as a professional athlete: both as a wrestling champion and a member of the Netherlands’ National Baseball team. After retiring from sport, Albers got into mixing when he landed a gig as the host of a sport and music program on Dutch radio. Albers found he had a natural knack for mixing tracks together, and it wasn’t long before this became the focus of his program. His musical career culminated with the release of 1992’s classic hit “Plastic Dreams”, which remains Jaydee’s claim to fame. This track has been remixed and re-released many times over the years. Enjoy!
