Song of the Day: Janet Jackson “Control” (Parralox Remix)

Janet Jackson‘s 1986 album Control remains an evergreen statement of career autonomy from an incredibly talented musician. The title track, in particular, served as a warning shot for what was to follow, with Jackson absolutely relishing her new-found ability to shape her own career and music. With Control Janet moved firmly out of the shadow of her then “King of Pop” older brother Michael and made music that hit someplace in between funk and synth-pop. The album proved to be both a huge critical and commercial success and set up Janet Jackson to embark on a purple patch that would carry her well into the ’90s before she began to slow down.

The Parralox remix of “Control” retains many of the elements of the original, only adds a fierce disco element and ups the electronics. While the original was a funky, kinda boxy electro boogie, this remix glides by effortlessly on Moroder-esque groove that refuses to quit. In short, the remix takes what was already a dancefloor masterpiece and makes it just a little bit better. This is pure, unquestionable, dance-floor dynamite. Play it at your own risk.
