Song of the Day: Huck-A-Bucks “The Bud”

[T]his track takes you right into the heart and soul of what this homegrown DC style is

When my son (who is now almost four years old) was still in the womb, we played him all kinds of music. I’d put a little speaker right up to my wife’s belly and we’d marvel at his responses to the music once he was able to kick and move. Invariably, he’d go nuts to two musical styles: D.C. Go-Go and Peruvian Festejo. “The Bud,” from the ‘Huck-A-Bucks‘ infamous 1995  Live! album, was always one of his favorites. Those kicks were right on time!

For me, this track takes you right into the heart and soul of what this homegrown DC style is: its all about the groove, the pocket, the socket, or whatever you wanna call it. It is indeed the infectious beat that gives rise to the power of this communal, trance-inducing music. Go-Go is a feeling and a pulse that gets to your soul. I can’t say it didn’t make me tear up a little bit with hometown pride when my P.G. County Hospital-born-son went off to the Huck-A-Bucks while still a little amphibious creature. He still loves it to this day. That’s my boy!

Formed in Washington D.C. in the early 1990’s, the Huck-A-Bucks have achieved legendary status in the district for their raw and interactive fusion of Go-Go and Hip Hop. They’ll forever be remembered in DC as one of the fiercest groups of the 90’s.
