Song of the Day: House of Love “Nothing To Me”

“Nothing To Me” is an early EP track from House of Love that underlines the London-based band’s alt-pop credentials. The song was released in 1987 as part of the Real Animal EP. It caught the band when it was still more-or-less and even partnership between co-founders singer-songwriter-guitarist Guy Chadwick and lead guitarist Terry Bickers. The band combined the slightly dour goth pop sensibilities of Chadwick with the psychedelic guitar-lines of Bickers to mesmerizing results. Their 1987 debut single, “Shine On” was a surprise hit the group and set them on their way.

Sadly, the group’s initial partnership only lasted for one full-length record and a handful of singles, with Chadwick‘s control-freak personality and Bickers‘ struggles with chronic depression proving to be an uneasy and unstable alliance. Bickers would leave the group in 1989. Fortunately, with his depression better managed, Bickers was able to rejoin the group in 2003 and has remained a member since then. House of Love have remained semi-active as a touring act since 2003 and the reformed line-up have released several albums, the last of which was 2013’s She Paints Words in Red.
