Song of the Day: Charlotte Gainsbourg “Deadly Valentine (Soulwax Remix)”

Charlotte Gainsbourg has just released her first album in seven years. Rest is her long-awaited follow-up to 2009’s absolutely wonderful I.R.M. album. After her very successful collaboration with Beck, Rest is produced by SebastiAn (who was last heard narrating “Facebook Story” on Frank Ocean’s Blonde album).

Also featuring collaborations with Daft Punk’s Guy-Manuel de-Homem-Christo, Sir Paul McCartney, Owen Pallett, and Connan Moccasin, Gainsbourg has moved away from the eclectic French pop of I.R.M. and into a more dance floor-friendly direction. Second single “Deadly Valentine” thumps along on a modern disco groove, while Gainsbourg’s ethereal, breathless vocals float through the mix. Soulwax apply a light touch in their remix, pushing the groove front-and-center with kick drum, cowbell, and bass up in the mix and adding some additional space for Gainsbourg’s vocal.
