Song of the Day: Barry White “You’re The First, The Last, My Everything”

This ode to undying lifelong love that had gone unrecorded for 21 years, was originally written for the County Music market until Barry White re-wrote and transformed it into an international Disco anthem in 1974. From White‘s album, Can’t Get Enough, the song was his fourth top-ten hit on the Billboard Hot 100 Singles chart. Known for his distinctive bass-baritone range and romantic appeal, Barry White went on to become one of the best selling artists of all-time. His second biggest hit, “Can’t Get Enough of Your Love, Babe,” another one of his signature tunes, catapulted his message of unbridled love, devotion and passion to the wold-wide audiences. It has been said that more babies have been conceived by his music than any other artist. Surrounded by his 40-piece “Love Unlimited Orchestra,” Barry White adorned his compositions with some of the richest, lushest, and most textured arrangements to be found in popular music.

Hailing from Galveston, Texas, Barry White came into the world on September 12th of 1944. He spent his early years in South Central, Los Angeles, paying close attention to his mother’s classical music collection and learning the piano. His brother’s murder, and early gang-related run-ins with the law and jail time, while still a teenager, resulted in a life-changing transformation. These experiences helped cement his dedication to pursuing a career in the music, and once he started down this path in the early 1960’s, he never looked back. By the time of his passing in 2003, he’d had over 3 decades of hits, numerous gold records, and record sales in excess of 100 million.
