Listen: DJ Ty Hussell Live WPFW DJ Set 04/24/2020

I’ve had a long-standing relationship with DC’s beloved Community Radio Station WPFW 89.3 FM. Just a few years out of high school, I began volunteering as a phone operator during WPFW’s pledge drives. Having been on the air since 1977, this commercial-free, listener supported station, is part of the larger Pacifica Foundation network, which comprises five independently operated stations across the U.S.

I’ve always had a thing for local radio. The incredible programming that I was able to pick up coming out of Baltimore and DC’s local stations in 70’s and 80’s as a kid growing up in Columbia, Md. has had a huge impact on my life. While still in elementary school, and armed with a cheap little Radio Shack mixer, mic, and reverb unit, I used to host ‘Ty Russell’s DJ Hour’ from my parent’s dining room to exactly one listener–my headphone wearing self. Fast forward quite a few years…..

For a number of years now, I’ve been acting as a guest host for a few different shows on WPFW. Most recently, I’ve been filling in the Friday 3-5pm slot as part of the Jazz & Justice Program’s “Fantastic Friday” edition.  This link is to my third installment of this program. For your reference, all three shows are posted up on Mixcloud under my profile. This series of shows was done live from lockdown here in San Jose, Costa Rica, where I am based for part of the year, and broadcast in DC. This set comprises a mix of Soul, Go-Go, Reggae, Afro-Latin and a variety of other styles. It features songs by Bacao Rhythm & Steel Band, Count Ossie & The Mystic Revelations of Rastafari, The Meters, Docteur Nico, Israel Vibration, Shelly Thunder, Ray Barretto, Pure Elegance, and many more incredible artists from around the world. Sending love to you all during this time of uncertainty and difficulty and I hope you enjoy the show!
