Song of the Day: Fat Daddy “Holiday Baby”

Fat Daddy in the studio

Paul “Fat Daddy” Johnson was a fast-talking soul DJ out of Baltimore, the self-described “300 Pound King of Soul.” His rapid-fire, rhythmic, jive-talking delivery made him an on-air favorite and his celebrity grew well beyond the city limits of Baltimore. He cut this R&B holiday shuffler, “Holiday Baby,” in 1963 for local label, Johnny-A. He eventually left the Baltimore airwaves to do national promotions for Motown, Atlantic and Capitol Records. He died much too young in 1978 in Los Angeles at the age of 40.

The tune has been included on two absolutely outstanding holiday soul compilations, 2011’s Santa’s Funk & Soul Christmas Party and the brand-new Gonna Have a Really Soul Christmas, both readily available on Amazon.
