steponThe years 1964, 1977, and 1988 all witnessed explosions of new music coming out of the UK: Beatlemania, punk and the “baggy” Madchester movement respectively.
The Happy Mondays (from Manchester) emerged in the late 80’s to become on the UK’s biggest bands in the early 90’s. They found the perfect mix of dance and rock and “Step On” (originally a 1971 hit for John Kongos going by the full title, “He’s Gonna Step On You Again”) from their 1990 album Pills ‘n’ Thrills and Bellyaches is one of my favorites. It reminds me of the time when the Stone Roses, New Order, the Charlatans UK, Inspiral Carpets and James ruled the import sections at Tower Records (RIP). It still sounds great today. “You’re twisting my melon man!”
