Song of the Day: James Brown “Dooley’s Junkyard Dawgs”

From 1980-1985, I attended the University of Georgia (UGA) in Athens, GA. The little town of Athens is mainly known for two things – bands (B-52’s, REM, Widespread Panic, Vic Chestnutt, Pylon, Of Montreal, and many more) and football (the Bulldogs or Dawgs for short). A little less than two hours from Athens is the city of Augusta which is also known for two things: The Masters and The Godfather of Soul James Brown.

James Brown was a huge Georgia Bulldog fan! My freshman year he was the grand marshall of our homecoming parade and every year at homecoming he’d join that year’s crop of cheerleaders for a few cheers. In 1975, he wrote and released a song called “Dooley’s Junkyard Dogs” honoring that year’s team which was coached by Vince Dooley and had a ferocious defense nicknamed the “Junkyard Dawgs.” The song was still in regular rotation on the local radio stations and in the dorms during football season when I got there a few years later. I still have my original single. Go Dawgs!!!!
