Song of the Day: Eddie Kendricks “Date With the Rain”

four-on-the-floor danceable soul

The snow has come and gone here in downtown DC and has turned into a wet and rainy late winter day. Here’s some Eddie Kendricks to get you through. “Date With the Rain” is the lead single from his brilliant and highly recommended 1972 sophomore album People… Hold On on Tamla Records. The former Temptations leader has crafted a bright uptempo soul groove. This kind of four-on-the-floor danceable soul would soon be known to the world as “disco.” The original album cut rushes past in a mere 2:42. So here’s the “Special Remix Disco Version” from the rare Motown promo 12″.

  1. Great, great, great jam. Problem is, I know I know it, but can’t find it in the Whitburn Top 40 books (R&B or Pop). Was this ever releases as a single? If so, did it ever chart?

If not, wow. This has to be one of Eddie’s best post-Temptations tunes.
